Fulda Sacramentary Litany "Dicamus omnes"

 The following is from a Litany given in a 10th century Missal [Sacramentary] from Fulda. I am not quite sure what manuscript Bingham, and others mean, but, it is given in a few printed text; hopefully, I can find the digitized manuscript. There is, of course, a discussion about whether the response is "Lord, have mercy" or "We pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy." I believe the proper form to be "Lord, have mercy" and the phrase "Oramus Te, Domine.." to be, in fact, the ending section of each Diaconal petition.

Nevertheless, though the Mass Litany had begun to fall out of use in certain places using the Roman Rite in the 10th century, and, in fact, seems to have not be mandated in the late 7th century Ordo Romanus, there were still places that used a proper Mass Litany in the Orthodox Roman Rite. The Kyrie verses, though, survived, and various forms of the "Bidding Office" after the sermon and before the Offertory were still popular, as filling in a need when the old Litany began to fall out of use in some places. This and the Gelasian Litany, would, therefore, appear to be the older Mass Litanies [as opposed to the Processional Litanies, which were used prior to Mass proper at the Introit].

V. Let us all say from all our heart and mind:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. Thou Who lookest down upon the Earth, and makest it to tremble, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For the highest peace and the tranquility of our times, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For Thine Holy Catholic Church, which is from this region all the way to the ends of the lands of the earth, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For our Father, Bishop N., for all Bishops, Presbyters, Deacons, and all the clergy, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For this place and all who dwell in it, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For the most pious Emperor and all the Roman army, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For all those who are established in high places, for virgins, widows, and orphans, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For those travelling, and making a journey, and sailing, and the penitents and catechumens, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. For those who in the Holy Church give forth the abundant fruit of mercy, O Lord God of hosts, do Thou hear our prayers, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. That we may be mindful of the Holy Apostles, and Martyrs, that by their prayers for us we may obtain forgiveness, we pray Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy:

R. Lord, have mercy.

V. To be granted a Christian and peaceful end of our lives, we ask from the Lord:

R. Do Thou grant, O Lord, do Thou grant.

V. And that the Divine Power remain in us, the chain of charity, we ask the Lord:

R. Do Thou grant, O Lord, do Thou grant.

V. To preserve the sanctity and purity of the Catholic Faith, we ask the Holy God:

R. Do Thou grant, O Lord, do Thou grant.

V. Let us all say, O Lord hearken and have mercy!
